Review of Wattpad. Books, Books and More Books

While I love reading books written by already established writers, I wanted people to read mine, and give feedback. So I went onto Google and started searched for creative writing sites when Wattpad came up.

Wattpad is a brilliant social networking site designed specifically to allow any aspiring authors to write and publish their work and receive feedback from other like minded people. Wattpad is directed at anyone from the age of thirteen up, so whether you’re old or young, it’s possible to find stories that you as an individual would like.

Unlike sites like Facebook and Twitter, Wattpad remains in the corner of the internet that is rarely noticed by those that surf the web on a daily basis. So the only way you will come across the site is if you type their names into a search engine.

Being a part of this communities feels like a privilege, because not everyone knows about it. I have had conversations with other writers, and I’ve had people leaving messages telling me to update my stories. I’ve even left messages telling people to update because I’ve become hooked on their stories.

However, there is an etiquette that every Wattpad user must stick to. One rule is you never go onto the profile page of a writer you like and leave a message saying “Could you please read my story.” You would have to go to one of the clubs and have a conversation with other writers, and eventually, you will be able to subtly suggest you story.

Another rule is give advice. Don’t comment on a story saying “This is rubbish”, offer them advice on how they could improve the story. They politer you are to other users, the politer they will be to you.

The scale of how popular Wattpad is cannot be imagined. In 2013 alone, people spent 41 billion minutes on the site, reading more than 30 million stories.

Wattpad writers are no longer confined to writing stories on the computer anymore. Due to advances in technology, they can now use their mobile phones. A whopping 53% of all Wattpad users have used a smart phone to write a story.

Then there are those readers who have been published. Wattpad has introduced ‘Fan-funding’ which is a scheme where readers that like a completed story, can contribute an amount of money to help the writer to publish it.

But, some of the more popular stories are likely to be discovered by publishing houses. One such story was ‘The Kissing Booth’ by Beth Reeks. Which was discovered by Random House who offered Beth a three book deal.

Footprint Live Analytics Review

Footprint Live Analytics Review

Whether you are a Webmaster, SEO expert or a blogger it is very important that you are able to easily understand and analyse visitors to your site or blog. Whilst there are various products available on the market; such as Google Analytics, very few offer the ability to provide quality accurate live, real-time data tracking the movements of visitors as they navigate through your site or blog. In this article we will briefly review a free product; Footprint Live, which allows you to do just that.

What is Footprint Live and how does it work?

Footprint Live is a product conceived and developed by the Opentracker company based in the Netherlands. They have been around for a couple of years and put simply their "goal is to build tools that simplify the process of understanding website traffic." By simply, they mean giving you the information that you need, when you need it, without having to have a PhD in statistics in order to understand it. To get started is very easy and free registration only requires from you an email address, site or domain name and what Timezone you wish the data to be displayed in. Once you have registered you will then receive a piece of HTML code (JavaScript) from Footprint, which you then place within the source code and pages of your site or blog you want to track. Once done you are able to log into the Footprint Live site and watch your traffic live. It really is that simple and you can be up and running within minutes!

The thing I really like about the product is that it is very simple to use and understand; the user interface is very intuitive and provides quite a lot of helpful real-time data. In the main information screen you will see a list of all (recent) visitors. This is presented in reverse chronological order (most recent visitors at the top of the list). "Green puppets" show that the user is currently on the site, whereas "Orange puppets" indicate they have not clicked within the last few minutes and may be offline. "Red puppets" indicate a user has not clicked for more than around 10 minutes. If you hover over any of the visitor puppets, you are then presented a user profile of the visitor, including the referrer, search engine, search term, status, contact/address data, company/organisation, ISP, browser, IP Address, number of pages viewed, number of visits, and the first and last measurement. You can also click on any visitor puppet and will be taken to their complete clickstream. A clickstream is a reverse chronological list of activity by your selected visitor.

Footprint abide by a strict Privacy Policy and whilst will identify returning visitors and display those organisations, companies, universities or government agencies visiting your site or blog, Footprint does not provide personal data and your visitors will remain anonymous. Moreover, Footprint does not provide any personal contact information.

Whilst the product is free to use, you can also subscribe to an upgrade (€4.99 per month or €49 per year) where you can utilise additional features; such as visitor-tagging, secure HTTPS SSL tracking, additional Timezone information as well as data export facilities into CSV, PDF formats etc, if required.

The only really (minor) negative I have found is that occasionally the site doesn't track all the visits and some may slip through the net, but this could be due to the fact that the visitor didn't actually stay long enough for the JavaScript to run properly or had other issues such as JavaScript disabled on their web browsers etc. On the few occasions this hasn't been the case and there has been a problem with the site, the issue has been resolved from the Footprint team with a matter of hours, even on the weekend.

Whilst some people may argue that it (alone) doesn't provide enough statistical analytical data for their liking, FootPrint Live is a great companion to tools such as Google Analytics. In fact, you can now integrate Footprint with Google Analytics to gain an even more detailed analytical picture of all the traffic to your sites or blogs.

So, you have heard my thoughts on Footprint Live, why not check out the Footprint Live Free Demo to literally see (for) yourself!

Advantages of using the Logitech C270 HD Webcam

One of the great advantages of using Logitech C270 webcam is that on a Windows XP (SP2) machine, it works straight out the box. Simply plug into your USB port and you will be holding video conference calls with your friends and family over Skype, Windows Live Messenger, Yahoo Messenger or OoVoo within minutes. It also worked very well with the LearnByCam Virtual Classroom. Overall, the quality of the video was quite impressive and the movement well syncronised with barely noticeable pixelation. Even in poor lighting conditions the sharpness of the images were better than expected. The inbuilt microphone was good enough for communication and the echo was minimal (you can also use the headset which comes with the cam). The Logitech C270 is small enough to fit in your pocket (8.4cm x 6.0cm x 3.2cm), very light (approx 260g) and the length of the USB cord at 150 cm was long enough for me to work with without any issues.

I know that many people have reported issues when trying to use the Logitech C270 with Windows 7, but I must admit I didn't encounter a single problem when testing with a Window 7 Home Basic Edition OS. After I plugged the cam into the USB port, the driver software was automatically downloaded (about 5.9 MB) and then installed. I was able to use the camera, which after installation co-existed with a Lenovo Inbuilt Easy Camera. I could easily toggle between the two cameras without any problems at all. Furthermore, aside from Windows machines, I also understand that there appears to be Mac drivers on the Logitech support pages, so even Mac users should be able to enjoy the camera.

The C270 also comes with a CD containing software allowing you to alter various settings like colour correction, brightness and zoom. Furthermore, it allows you to take advantage of motion detection (the webcam will start to record if it detects movement, then stops recording when there is no movement), face-tracking and the usual expected effects. To be honest, I personally do not think you really need to install the additional software in order to enjoy the product. At the very affordable current price of $11.99 / £16.99 this camera offers great value for money and would be suitable for most users. There are, however, some minor annoyances...

Disadvantages of using the Logitech C270 HD Webcam

The main issue I found with the Logitech C270 is the actual design of the camera mounting. When you mount the camera onto the screen it is a little precarious and doesn't feel as secure as it should do. Whilst, it doesn't actually fall off, you tend to get the feeling that it could do very easily (perhaps a piece of bluetac could help). I also think Logitech's design with the mounting limits the ability to position the camera as you may want, especially when mounted on the top of a laptop or notepad.

Otherwise, I thought the software on the CD was a bit "clunky" and the removal of the software wasn't completely clean, as it did leave some files and remnance in the registry. Whilst the software contains some interesting features, I do not feel they are really that necessary.

Basically if you want a lightweight, compact webcam that is very easy to use, works straight out of the box and delivers quite impressive video and audio quality, you could do far worse than choosing the Logitech C270 HD. It integrates very well with Skype, Windows Live Messenger, Yahoo Messenger and OoVoo. At the current Amazon discounted sales price of $11.99 / £16.99 I think it represents great value for money and would suit most users' needs perfectly.
